This tutorial is adapted from this PCworld article.

I’m using a PC.

First you will need some free software to convert any mp3 song of your choice into a rocking ringtone for you iPhone.

You will need the iTunes and Audacity software both are available for a free download.

First take the song or any audio file you want to turn into a ringtone and open it with Audacity.

You need to trim the song or audio file into a 30 sec or less clip. I use 29 secs just to be safe.

To trim the song click and drag to highlight the parts you don’t want. When you hit delete it will trim the highlighted portion of the song.

Once you have a 30 sec or less clip. You are ready to export the song. If you have any other phone you can export this clip as an mp3 file transfer it to your phone and set it as a ringtone, but if you have an iPhone there are a few extra steps.

Choose File/export/select mp3 for any non-iPhone

For iPhones you need to export the file as an AAC file.

export file as AAC

Then you need to change the file extension of the ACC file from .m4a to .m4r. (find the saved file// right click// choose properties// and edit the name of the file.)

Ignore the warning and press Yes

When I changed the file extension the icon picture also changed. Mine says ringtone. :)

the first two files show the original ACC then the file after the extention change.

Connect your phone to iTunes and drag and drop the .m4r file to your phone. It will automaticly sync.

Then voila this custom ringtone will be available when you want to choose a ringtone for your iPhone.

Enjoy your Custom Ringtone ;)

Yay! now you can make your own free custom ringtone for your iPhone. :)
