Baby Wearing Project

HeartsNumber of View: 520

I’m a huge fan of baby wearing. I used a basic ring/sling type carrier for my son along with a simple wrap. The only thing I didn’t like about these two carriers is that it seems too hot for our warm Hawaiian climate. I’ve always been jealous of the cool hip mommies and their ERGO baby carriers.

ERGO Baby Carrier

What I love most about the ERGO is that it looks about as simple as slipping on a backpack and the baby looks really comfy and secure. I don’t know why but I’ve always wanted to carry my tot on my back. I wouldn’t do a back carry with an infant but I love the idea for a toddler. Piggyback rides are awesome and fun so I just imagine a happy contented baby. Getting a baby in the “back carrying” position with a wrap was always too scary for me to try. But as you can see the ERGO makes it looks so easy. Unfortunately I’ve never had the pleasure of trying out an ERGO mainly because I’ve never had an extra $100- $160 dollars to spend on a baby carrier. I have no doubt that the ERGO would be well worth the money since I’ve seen some pretty BIG kids being toted around in those things and my VERY heavy 3 yr old still asks to be carried quite often. I don’t know if I’ll ever have the chance to use an ERGO, but there is another option I’ve been meaning to try. It’s called a Mei Tai Baby Carrier. This simple Asian style carrier, reminds me a lot of the ERGO baby carrier. There are many websites that sell Mei Tai Carriers and they run around $50- $70, but the super simple Mei Tai design makes it the sewing project on the top of my To Do List.

Mei Tai Carrier Basign Design

It’s basically a rectangle and 4 straps. The rectangle holds the baby the bottom strap goes around your waist and the top straps go over your shoulders criss crosses in the front and ties in the back. This carrier also makes the back carry look easy. Maybe not as easy as an ERGO baby carrier, but at least less scary than other methods.

I’ve known about this carrier for some time now, but I’m just a little hesitant because I have very basic sewing skills and just a simple home machine. I don’t trust 100% that something I made will be done well enough and be strong enough to hold my baby. But I’m going to give it a try and just make sure my husband is home when I try it on with my babies so he can be there to spot me.

Esty Finds: Vintage Patterns

VintagePatterns-EtsyNumber of View: 424

I’m a pattern junky, lol and a fabric junky. Last night i found some old fabric with a receipt and was surprised to find that I bought it back in 2005. Yep it’s just been sitting around for 6 yrs.  In my recent sewing adventures I vowed to use some of these old patterns and fabrics before I buy new stuff. So I’ve used a few patterns and made a few dresses and tops, but of these projects the ones I really love and were the most successful came from old vintage patterns (mama’s old hand-me-downs). One of these late nights while the fambam was sleeping I found myself browsing on Etsy, BIG MISTAKE. Esty has so many cute vintage patterns. I couldn’t resist and bought a few. Here are my finds. Can’t wait to get them. Hopefully I’ll at least be able to use up some of the ‘old’ fabric.

Thanks Mom

My mom gave me a few of her old patterns. I love these vintage patterns. They come pre-cut (by my mom lol) don’t have a lot of pieces and the instructions are really easy to follow. I made this See & Sew 5401 pattern today. It was so easy I didn’t even need the instructions because it’s only two pieces. It’s like a tennis outfit or something it has a top and a shorts. I used a medium weight jersey material. Cut out the 2 top pieces one front and one back. I decided to lengthen the sleeve an inch because I wanted more of a full sleeve instead the caped sleeve look. I sewed up the shoulders and sides and got this pretty comfy top. I think I’m going to leave the raw edges, because jersey doesn’t fray. Pattern – Free Fabric – $2.04 a yard. Cost of this top around $2=<3 wow I finally saved money sewing. Here’s the finished product. What do you think?

You would have never guessed it was so long

Thanks Mom

of course the baby had to get in on the photoshoot

Cake Cookies with Sprinkles from V and Co.

cake-cookies-875x290Number of View: 417

A few weeks ago V and Co. posted a blog entry about super easy cookies made with a box of cake mix. Her pictures are really awesome, well her entire blog is really just amazingly beautiful, and so were these cookies. So pretty in fact that I’ve been thinking about them ever since. It’s so quick and easy all you need is a box of white cake mix, an egg, and some water and oil. Oh and sprinkles you can’t for get the sprinkles, that’s what makes them so pretty. Safeway had cake mix on sale for $1.59 so I bought a box and tried it out. Mine were not as pretty ;( but they sure were yummy. I think my oven was too hot because they puffed up really big and browned too fast. I finally turned down the temp for the last tiny batch of six cookies so those came out pretty. Ah success.

poof

I love sprinkles

yummy. Are you hungry yet?

Salt Dough Christmas Ornaments

featuredNumber of View: 1538

I was debating on weather to purchase cheap Christmas ornaments or attempt to make my own, but when I stumbled upon Katy Elliot’s Blog about Salt Dough Ornaments I was sold. There are minimal ingredients and the process is so simple I tried them that night and by the next morning I had an adorable and fully decorated tree. All you need to make these fabulous ornaments are a little flour some salt and good old fashion H2O. You use equal parts of flour and salt for every one part of water.

For example Katy Elliot’s Recipe is

1/2 cup of salt

1/2 cup flour

1 cup water

The recipe can easily be doubled or tripled depending on how many ornaments you want to make. But the 1 cup batch makes more than enough ornaments for a small sized tree. I made around 20 ornaments.

HOW TO:

To make the ornaments mix the ingredients together until the dough is sticky. Have a little extra flour on hand to powered your work space and hands while your work with the dough.

I had some cute Christmas cookie cutters I found at the thrift store last year and was super jazzed at the opportunity to finally use them. Being a very inexperienced baker I apply extra flour as needed to keep the dough easy to work with.

Roll out the dough on a flat surface and use your cookie cutters to cut out fun festive shapes. Be sure to make a hole for the ribbon. I used a plastic drinking straw, but if you would like a smaller hole use a skewer or a toothpick.

When you are done with your shapes place them on a cookie sheet and bake them at 200 degrees for 4-6 hours or leave them in over night if you like. If you have left over dough you can refrigerate the dough in an air tight container. I made 2 separate batches. If you hand mold your own shapes instead of using cookie cutters you may need to increase your drying time.

Some of my ornaments cracked a little bit after baking because I used a little too much flour and it dried out he dough. If  your dough is too dry you can wet your hands and gradually work in more water.

All done!

Cool ornaments completely before decorating.

These ornament are not eatable and can not get wet. To make your ornaments last longer they need to be sealed with 3-4 very thin coats of polyurethane gloss varnish. Cover the ornament completely you want to be sure no moisture can get in.

I did not paint or add any decorations to my ornaments I like the ‘raw’ look. So I just tied some ribbon and hung them on my tree. When my niece came over the next day she asked if she could eat them because they looks like cookies.

With a little bit of practice and creativity your salt dough ornament could be an easy homemade Christmas gift.
