My 1 yr old was napping so I put on Little Einsteins for my 2 yr old and decided to get started. I got a good amount done cutting the patten, the fabric and even started sewing a bit. I could still hear the sounds of Little Einsteins in the living room, but I decided to take a break and check on the kids anyway. It was quiet. A little too quite. Usually my son sings along pretty loud.
So I walk into the living room and . . .

New artwork for the fridge

And the kitchen cupboards
the shower, various places on the wall and floor, some toys. . .

It wasn't me mom.
At least he’s at that stage where it’s fun to help clean up. He’s not mad just concentrating, and thank god these crayola markers are washable. A few (hundred) wipes did the trick

Falling In Love with Kanzashi
Kanzashi is another beautiful Japanese art form which started a long time ago as hair ornaments and adornments for Geisha women. These beautiful crafts are silk folded flowers. This Japanese tradition has survived until today and has gained popularity over the years in the crafting community. If you google enough you should be able to find yourself a tutorial. But nobody can do it like the Masters and luckily enough for us there are still a few Kanzashi masters left today. Who continue to bless us with their creative intricate and breathtakingly beautiful designs.

Master Kuniko Kanawa Creation
I have made a few attempts at constructing a simple ume style blossom. It took a few tries, but now I have two keepers although it’s still not perfect. I had to add additional petals to get my flowers to look nice.
It’s good to use fabric scraps to practice. I had to start out with 4 inch squares to get a hang of the folds, and then I moved on to the recommended 2 inch squares. The experience is much like folding origami except harder because the fabric is floppy and you don’t get a nice crease unless you use starch. Since I constructed a few flowers all I need now is the finishing touches, a center bead or button and maybe a bobby pin or alligator clip so I can sport my very own Kanzashi creation.
I’m so inspired by this new craft and once I get the folding down I hope to be able to create my own unique designs
Once I get some beads or buttons to match I’ll upload my finished Kanzashi Project.
Fabric covered buttons are so fun and easy to do too! Too bad the smallest size walmart had as 3/4″. Here are the pictures of my finished Kanzashi.
I’m excited to do more. Still need to attach these to clips or pins.
Update: Kanzashi for Christmas

Hawaii's Can Food Drive Sculptures @ Pearlridge
Replacing the Bug Exhibition at Pearlridge is the Food Drive ‘Canstruction’ Competition located in the central lobby of Uptown. Donated can goods for the Hawaii Food Bank were sculpted by local Hawaii architects, design and engineering professionals. The Theme this year is Statehood. The sculptures included Aloha Tower, the Arizona memorial and a great big Hawaii State Quarter. To vote for your favorite design throw a can in the shopping cart next to your sculpture from now until August 29th 2009. All donated caned goods will go to help feed Hawaii’s hungry. My favorite this year is the local Shave Ice rainbow flavored canstuction near the elevator and Starbucks. My runner ups go to the Aloha Shirt and poi pounder designs.
