Got some stuff

bookshelf1Number of View: 290

Lately I’ve been trying to be more organized. I’ve also been working on keeping the house CLEAN. The kids are actually pretty good a picking up their toys when asked. Before I just didn’t expect them to and was too tired/frustrated to pick up after them ALL THE TIME, but now for some reason it seems do able.  It was really frustrating before because we live in a small apartment and there’s just too much stuff. Hence the getting organized. It’s difficult for me to keep things neat when there’s just too much stuff and not enough places to put them. So I got rid of a lot of my children’s toys and kept only the ones that I still see them playing with. They’ve seemed to have out grown a lot of them. I also stashed away a lot of the singing battery operated toys and I figured I’d rotate them every month or so. Here a few things I bought to get more organized.

1. A small book shelf $18-

2. A pop up hamper $5

3. Clear plastic storage bins. $3

4. A small dry erase board for the refrigerator. $6

We used to just dump all the kids toys in a large plastic bin, but the problem with that is when they look for a toy they pull everything out and all the toys seem to end up everywhere on a daily basis. So I decided to go with a bookshelf that way their toys are displayed and they can just pull the one they want off of the shelf. I got a pop up hamper to store light stuff that doesn’t really do well on shelves mainly all my daughters “babies” (stuffed animals) and this huge collection of balls that we’ve accumulated. I picked up a few clear storage bins with lids for my kids marble run toy and all the tiny nik naks. I specifically got storage containers with a lid because I want my son to ask me before playing with the marble run toy. I’m the one building it anyway so when he wants to play with it I build him a nice little track and when he’s done we clean it up and put it away together. The lid prevents him from randomly dumping the whole thing out on the floor every ten mins, because while it’s very amusing to him it’s not so much for me. I think he likes the loud crashing noise. The dry erase board is just for me it’s handy to write little reminders. I write my “things to do reminders” and I use it to build my shopping list. When ever we run out of something I add it to the board. Then when it’s time to go shopping I don’t forget anything ;) .

Now that I’ve purged their toys and made some room here are some of the things my kids (3 and 19 months) are really interested in right now that I want to get more of.

1. puzzles

2. building blocks or legos

3. books

4. coloring books

Maternity Pants Tutorial

Maternity Pants Tutorial

Sample Pants From The Tutorial

What you need:

A pair of pants

Stretch knit material

A sewing Machine

Sew it yourself. Maternity Pants are very expensive and unless you are planning on having a LOT of kids you probably won’t be using it much. I can usually fit my old clothes for most of my pregnancy so I don’t start NEEDING maternity pants until later in the second trimester. In this tutorial you learn how to turn regular pants in to comfy maternity pants. Adding much more variety to your wardrobe for much less. She suggests buying a few cheap pairs of pants at a thrift store so you don’t turn all your regular pants into maternity ware, after all you will need clothes after baby is born. I’ve tried this tutorial and it is simple and pretty easy. I love the pictures.  I always need pictures. She obviously uses a Serger to do her ends, but I used a traditional home sewing machine and alternated between straight and zigzag stitches. So far I’ve transformed two pairs of old pants and it turned out great with minimal frustration ;)

Simply Recipes

Christmas Cookies from SimplyRecipes.com

This is a great cooking site with a wonderful collection of simple recipes for home cooked meals for the family. I believe home cooked meals can definitely save a family money. The problem is What to cook? I often get bored of the same old dishes and when I try to find new recipes they are much too fancy for my skill level and require ingredients I’ve never heard of. The recipes on this site are easy to follow have a short prep and cook time, and are absolutely delicious. I’m going to try the cookie recipes for Christmas Gifts this year. ;)

Make your own Modeling Wax Tutorial

Modelling Beeswax sold on Etsy

I saw some modeling wax on sale at Etsy. It’s a fun alternative to playdoh. The great thing about it is that is never dries out. Yay! I was pretty hard to find a tutorial about it but I found one here at naturenest.wordpress.com. I haven’t tried it yet and I wonder if it will turn out like the ones sold on Etsy. I’m also not sure where to look for these ingredients, lol.

But if you don’t want to make it you can always buy it on etsy. Aren’t the colors beautiful?

Thrift Shopping and Treasure Hunting

Little Kermit

Thrift store shopping was so fun the last time I went. Here are some of the things I found. First up I found this cute little Kermit key chain. It was in a big bag of miscellaneous toys I bought the bag because I saw a bunch of Pokemon toys in it and my brothers are really into Pokemon right now, so I thought I would surprise them. My next bag of goodies contained vintage cookie cutters. I was surprised at how good the condition was of all these cutters. I listed a few in my etsy store there was a Raggedy Ann and Andy set a Little Boy and Girl Gingerbread Man Set, and some really cool collection of playing card suit shapes with fluted edges. The ones I decided to keep were assorted sized hearts and flowers, perfect for the up coming holidays. I plan to bake batches of cookies and other treats for my love ones this year.

The next thing I found were Japanese fridge magnets they came with a set of regular letter and number fridge magnets. I’ve been wanting to get some of these fun fridge magnets for my son for some time now and have been having a hard time finding them. I was so stoked to see the Japanese ones thrown in there too like an added bonus. Too bad I don’t know any Japanese. ;)

Japanese Alphabet Fridge Magnets

The last toy I found were these little 1inch cubes with letters in them. They interlock so you can spell out words. All the sides alternate capital and lower case letters. Each block has one letter on it. I’ve never seen anything like it before. I think it’s a teaching tool. What do you think?

Spell Me

Mannequin

I also got a great little hat mannequin for my Mario and Luigi hats.

Hawaii Has a Lego Store!

Number of View: 232

Just visited Hawaii’s new Lego Store in Ala Moana Shopping Center today. What?!?  Hawaii didn’t have a lego store?, lol not that I know of, and I’ve lived here all my life. It’s small but still really cool. I wish I had a point and shoot, because the pictures from my camera phone didn’t turn out that great. There where lots of great displays. An Employee told me that local Hawaii Lego Club members got together to build different displays for the opening.

The Bus

The Bus

My favorite was this Bus display. Legos modeled after Hawaii’s  “The BUS”, I guess we’re proud of our transit system. There was also a really great beach display with palm trees, a killer wave, and even a lifeguard shack. I don’t know how long the displays are going to be around, so if you’re local go down to Ala Moana and check it out. It would be fun and exciting if they decide to continually update and create new designs. That would definitely draw me into the store every time. The sets they sell are also very cool, but pretty pricey, almost $300 for this carousel design! I didn’t know Legos cost so much.

more of "the bus"- pretty great model there's tinted windows and even a bicycle rack and bike on the front of the bus, lol too funny
